BMI Calculator
Input your height, weight and waist circumference, and our calculator will generate an easy-to-read report on your general health status, based on the BMI (Body Mass Index) formula.
Classification of Weight by BMI
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a measure of body fat based on height and weight. For most people, it is a fairly reliable method of determining whether a persons weight is a healthy amount for their height. The BMI does not distinguish between muscle and fat, however, so it is possible for athletes to have a high BMI due to muscle mass and still be healthy.
Health Risk by Waist Circumference
The waist circumference can be a useful measure of determining obesity and disease risks. A high waist circumference usually indicates an excessive amount of abdominal fat, which is associated with an increased risk for various diseases. The health risk goes up with a waist size that it greater than 35 inches for women or greater than 40 inches for men.
Your weight may warrant LAP-BAND surgery if:
- BMI is 40 or greater, or
- BMI is 30 or greater and you have serious co-morbid conditions, such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, or sleep apnea ***
*** UPDATE: FDA Lowered BMI Criteria for Lap-Band Surgery. On February 16, 2011, the Food and Drug Administration lowered the Body Mass Index criteria for Lap-Band weight loss surgery to a BMI of 30 (rather than 35) with one related health condition.
